Research and our scriptures say –
More Money = Less Empathy
Why so?
1) Abundance of wealth gives a person freedom, which is a good part.
But it gives a sense of freedom from others, so you don’t need to rely or think about surrounding people.
2) It is observed that wealthier people are less connected with the emotions of others who are suffering for basic needs like shelter, job, vehicles, education, health…
They see themselves differently from others and feel like the misfortune of others won’t happen to them.
_________
Less wealthy people = More sense of empathy
Why so?
Due to interdependence or dependence.
Dependency gives a deep sense of connection…like parents & children, husband-wife, employer and employee….
________
What to do?
As wealth increases, one should make intentional efforts to stay connected, to understand, to listen and to explore people’s feelings of different socio economic classes around.
Also have emotions for siblings, friends, neighbours, employees, colleagues, society….who are weak or suffering.
